Supervisor Roberts Still Not Showing His Hand

San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts has not yet revealed if he will resurrect the major development known as Merriam Mountain in North County. The master planned development would add more than 2,000 homes on the hills north of San Marcos.

The project was left in limbo after the Supervisors split their vote -- 2-to-2 -- on the development three weeks ago.

Supervisor Roberts missed the vote on the project due to other obligations in Sacramento. His staff says he has taken home reams of reports and a DVD of the hours of testimony from the public hearing he missed. He has one more week to decide if he wants to bring the proposal back for another vote.

The master planned community is proposed for Supervisor Bill Horn’s district and the developers won Horn’s support. Supervisor Greg Cox also gave the thumbs up, but without a third vote the project is going nowhere.

San Diego County and cities around the region are developing plans to house a 50 percent increase in population over the next 40 years. However, this project contradicts the county’s General Plan, which zones the steep terrain for just a few hundred homes.

So far, Supervisor Roberts has not indicated his intentions. If he supports the ambitious plan, he could call for another hearing. If not, he can let it die by doing nothing.
