A man was killed and a woman was hospitalized in serious condition following a single car crash Sunday off Monroe Street near Carlsbad Village Drive in Carlsbad, authorities said.
The car was northbound on Monroe Street just after 9:30 a.m. when it veered across the southbound lanes and crashed into a tree near the 2700 block of Monroe Street, Carlsbad police said.
The 79-year-old female driver suffered major injuries and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, police said.
The passenger, who police believe was a 91-year-old man, died at the scene. His identity will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, police said.
The crash was not suspected to be alcohol-related, police said.
Monroe Street was closed in both directions between Marron Road and Hosp Way during the investigation.
