Some Tijuana Neighborhoods Haven't Seen Trash Collector in 3 Months

The City of Tijuana is struggling with mountains of trash. As KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson explains, some neighborhoods haven't seen the trash man in three months.

Tijuana's new mayor Jorge Ramos said he never expected his mayoral duties would include shoveling trash. But he says the city's last administration let half Tijuana's fleet of trash trucks lapse into disrepair. So over the weekend, he led 3,000 people in a massive clean up.

Ramos: There were some places, some colonias, there were a whole bunch of bags with trash that were over my size.

Ramos says they collected 400 tons of trash and will hit the streets again this Saturday. Ramos recently rented trucks from out of state and bought 28 new ones. But they won't arrive for two months.

Meanwhile, critics say every new administration has to buy new garbage trucks. They charge Ramos is playing victim in attempt to get a political boost.
