Contest May Bring President Obama To Local High School

High Tech High International is one of six semi-finalists in a competition for an appearance by President Barack Obama at its commencement ceremony, the White House announced today.

The charter school focuses on international studies and is located at the High Tech High complex at Liberty Station.

HTHI is the only school west of Tennessee named as a semi-finalist for the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge, chosen for creativity in engaging and supporting students, academic results, and progress in preparing students to succeed in college and be ready for a career.

"I want to congratulate the six finalists for all they've done to prepare their students for college and careers, and I want to thank all of the schools that applied,'' Obama said. "I look forward to meeting the students and teachers of the winning school at their commencement.''

The six remaining schools will produce videos that will be placed on the website of the White House, and the public will have an opportunity to vote to narrow the field to three finalists. The president will make the final selection.
