Props. B and C Pass

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders celebrated the passage of two measures he says will give him tools to cut costs at the city. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Props. B and C Pass

Both Propositions B and C passed easily. Proposition B  means future pension benefit increases for city workers would have to be approved by the voters and Prop C allows the mayor to contract out more city services to the private sector.

Mayor Jerry Sanders sees the results as a green light for significant changes at the city.

Sanders: I think what’s exciting is the voters have said twice now they want to see reform at city hall and it gives us an opportunity to move forward and really start working in a different way.

The city has yet to complete negotiations with the labor unions to nail down exactly how the managed competition initiative will be put into practice. The measure calls for an independent review board to make final decisions on which services should be bidded out to private companies.
