Governor to Call Special Session to Address Healthcare Reform

Governor Schwarzenegger says he will call a special session of the Legislature to address health care reform. Meanwhile, lawmakers debated a Democratic plan Schwarzenegger has pledged to veto. The state Senate passed that plan on a 22-17 vote and sent it to the Assembly shortly after the governor announced his intention. Marianne Russ reports from Sacramento.

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata called a news conference to urge the governor to sign their plan, AB 8.

Nunez was hopeful Schwarzenegger would have a change of heart.

Nunez : None of us here should assume that the governor is going to veto this bill unless he himself tells us so after having reviewed the bill.

But the governor has consistently said he'll veto it because he says it doesn't cover everyone, and it puts the burden too much on business.

And Schwarzenegger's not the only one opposed to AB 8. Hundreds of nurses who say it doesn't ensure sufficient coverage rallied outside the Democrats' event.   The nurses support a government-run plan-something the governor vetoed last year.

Since the session wraps up this week, it looks increasingly likely the governor may call a special session to deal with healthcare.
