Federal Judge Allows Blackwater Training Facility in Otay Mesa

A federal judge decided today to allow Blackwater Worldwide to continue running a Naval training facility in Otay Mesa indefinitely. City Attorney Mike Aguirre says he'll appeal the ruling. KPBS Reporter Amita Sharma has details.

Judge Marilyn Huff granted an injunction that lets Blackwater remain at the Otay Mesa warehouse where it started training Navy sailors earlier this month. Huff says the private contractor received the appropriate permits from the city to run the facility.

City Attorney Mike Aguirre, however, contends that the judge has usurped the city's power to make decisions about how its land is used. He says the project requires a public review. Aguirre says he plans to appeal Huff's ruling on grounds that the city council should have the ultimate authority in deciding whether what he called an intense war training facility should go in the middle of an industrial area in Otay Mesa.
