Steve-O of "Jackass" celebrity has taken credit for covering part of a freeway sign near Mission Bay to convey an anti-SeaWorld message.

Steven Glover, otherwise known as Steve-O, can be seen in the short clip posted to his YouTube page on Wednesday as he climbs atop the green sign hanging over Interstate 5, after several tries, and covers the "Drive" in Sea World Drive with the word "SUCKS."

"I'm putting my foot down for Shamu," the 40-year-old movie and television performer and animal-rights activist said via the YouTube post.

He asked others to share the video using the hashtag #SeaWorldSucks, and to wish him "luck with the law."

It remained unclear Thursday whether Steve-O would face charges in connection with the May incident, but Steve Saville of Caltrans told NBC7 the agency was referring the information to the California Highway Patrol.

"We consider defacing public property at a cost to state taxpayers an unlawful act and a dangerous distraction for motorists," Saville told NBC7.

SeaWorld San Diego could not immediately be reached for comment.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
