The San Diego Unified School District is gearing up to open its first-ever ethics office. The new unit will work hand-in-hand with the district’s fraud investigation team. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The new office is located at district headquarters in Hillcrest. Ethics director Joan McRobbie is expected to begin next month. McRobbie will oversee ethics training for 15,000 district employees. District spokesperson Ursula Kroemer says problems can show-up in a number of ways.
Kroemer: Maybe someone who’s receiving overtime without actually working the overtime. Or there’s a school fundraiser that’s been conducted and the monies are not going to the school. Or it might be an employee who’s using a district credit card for personal use.
The ethics office will work closely with the audit and investigation team. The team will examine legitimate cases of fraud and abuse. District officials hope both programs will prevent problems and strengthen employees’ trust. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
