Gas Price Hike will Increase Costs of Consumer Goods

Diesel car and truck owners are expected to pay more for fuel next week. A consumer’s groups predicts the jump in prices will mean higher prices for food and other goods this holiday season. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce explains. The Utility Consumer’s Action Network monitors San Diego gas prices.  U-CAN’s Charles Langley says the price for diesel fuel at the pump may climb to more than three-dollars a gallon next week. Since most goods are shipped to stores by trucks that use diesel fuel, Langley says those price hikes will eventually be passed on to you.

Charles Langley: Essentially every package that is moved, every consumer durable good, practically everything that’s moved during the holiday season is dependent on diesel fuel.

Langley says he expects price increases at stores to come slowly over the next month as the diesel fuel hike is passed on to consumers. He says the spike in diesel prices is being blamed on a brief shutdown at British Petroleum’s Los Angeles-area refinery. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
