U.S. Sends Hospital Ship to Latin America

After years of being accused of ignoring Latin America, the Bush administration is employing a new tactic to show it cares about the region: medical diplomacy, the newest front in the battle for influence south of the border.

The U.S. military hospital ship Comfort is touring a dozen countries, providing a host of medical facilities to poor people in places like Nicaragua, Colombia and Panama.

Ideological foes of the U.S. have been going on medical missions to the region for years. Cuba now is also stepping up its operations in Latin America.
