Camp Pendleton Marine Killed in Afghanistan

The favorite quotation of Cpl. Jon-Luke Bateman, posted on his Facebook page, was this:

The quotation is from a poem by Wilfred Owen, a poet during World War I. Translated from Latin, it means:

According to the Department of Defense, 22-year-old Bateman died for his country in Afghanistan on January 15. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton.

On his Facebook page, Bateman identifies his parents as Tony and Laura Allen, his brothers as Kyle Allen and Paul Bateman III, and Kristin Denise Nunley as his sister. The Department of Defense reports Bateman was from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but Bateman identifies his hometown as Las Vegas.

The North County Times reports Bateman was on his first combat deployment when he was killed. On New Year's Eve of 2011, Bateman wrote on his Facebook wall that he was feeling unmotivated and asked friends to cheer him up. His mother quickly replied:

Bateman's military honors include include the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.
