The Navy wife who helped co-found Dogs on Deployment, a non-profit group that helps find temporary homes for the beloved canines of deployed troops, has been nominated as Military Spouse magazine's 2013 Military Spouse of the Year.
Alisa Johnson is also an active-duty officer in the Marine Corps and in Naval Flight Training at NAS Corpus Christi. Her husband and Dogs on Deployment co-founder Shawn Johnson is currently stationed at NAS North Island in San Diego.
In addition to placing scores of dogs that might have otherwise ended up in shelters in safe homes, Dogs on Deployment has been a vocal supporter of ending breed discrimination in military base housing.
Johnson wrote to Home Post about what being named 2013 Military Spouse of the Year would mean:
Winning this award will provide me with the opportunity to speak up about these problems, and provide solutions and education on how to prevent and improve the support for military members and their families with pets. The exposure for our mission to educate, advocate and support the military-pet community will be tremendous.
