A 22,500-gallon sewage spill prompted San Diego County authorities today to warn visitors to Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and part of South Mission Beach to stay out of the water.
The spill — reported by the City of San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater — sent sewage into the San Diego River near I-15, according to county officials.
"Because it may affect the beaches at the river's mouth, the beaches on either side have been closed,'' said to a statement from the San Diego County Environmental Health Department.
Signs have been posted and will remain in place until field tests show the water is safe for recreational use, authorities said.
