Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, will take over as speaker on May 12, it was reported Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Times cited multiple sources who said current Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, announced the planned transition date during a meeting of the Assembly Democratic caucus.

Atkins was voted in as the successor to Perez about two weeks ago. It was first revealed a little more than two months ago that she had accumulated enough votes to win the office.

Perez is being termed out this fall and is running for state controller.

Atkins will be the first San Diegan and first lesbian to run the Legislature's lower chamber.
