Strong 5.3 Earthquake Rocks Los Angeles Area

A strong earthquake rocked the Los Angeles area Thursday, swaying buildings in a wide area including West Los Angeles, Burbank and Woodland Hills.

Preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey indicated the shaker was a magnitude-5.3, centered about 48 miles southwest of the Channel Islands.

There are no immediate reports of damage. National Weather Service officials said there was no threat of a tsunami.
