Family members of a 42-year-old man tasered by Border Patrol agents at the San Ysidro Border Crossing last Friday night said he is brain dead. The Mexican Consulate in San Diego said it appears federal agents used excessive force.
The family of Anastasio Hernandez said he and his brother tried to cross the border illegally Friday but got caught.
Anastasio’s cousin, Veronica Hernandez, said he was trying to get back home to his wife and five kids after being deported recently.
Border Patrol officials said Anastasio became combative Friday, as they prepared to send him back to Tijuana.
Officials said he was out of control, so agents Tasered him. They said an ambulance came.
Anastasio’s cousin, Veronica, said he’s been brain dead at Scripps Memorial in Chula Vista since.
She said the family is devastated and is convinced the Border Patrol is lying.
Witnesses, who said they saw the altercation Friday at San Ysidro, said agents also kicked Anastasio while he was on the ground.
Veronica said Anastasio came to the U.S. to work 26 years ago.
She said no one has heard from Anastasio’s brother who was with him. San Diego police and Border Patrol officials said an investigation is ongoing.
