The Tony-Award winning musical "Dear Evan Hansen" and legendary metal band Tool will be taking the stage in San Diego this month.

It’s the first weekend of 2020 and if your calendar is already filling up this month, we've got a couple more events you may want to check out.

Nina Garin, former KPBS arts editor and current Editor-in-Chief of Pacific Magazine, joined Midday Edition to preview a Tony-Award winning play, local concerts and a contemporary dance production all coming to a San Diego stage this January.

Here are her top picks:

"Dear Evan Hansen"

This Tony-Award winning musical is making it's San Diego debut at the Civic Theatre. It tells the story of a teenage boy who writes letters to himself to build his confidence. But when he finds himself at the center of a tragedy, he's given an opportunity to reinvent himself only that it's all based on a lie. The show is directed by UCSD grad and former La Jolla Playhouse artistic chief Michael Greif and filled with catchy songs and social media. Be prepared to cry it out, Garin said. "Dear Evan Hansen" runs through January 12 at the Civic Theatre.

Fans of the legendary metal band Tool will need to wait no more. After a hiatus, Tool is making a comeback. This is the group's first tour since 2016 and their first studio album in 13 years. The new album, "Fear Inoculum," has everything Tool is known for, including lengthy tracks and the band's signature artsy metal sound. Tool will be performing January 10, 12 at Viejas Arena.

King Princess

Mikaela Straus is "King Princess." The 21-year-old singer/songwriter has built a big following since her debut single dropped in 2018. She's known for writing honest, "confessional" songs and her shows have become safe places for fans. "King Princess" will be performing songs off her first full-length album "Cheap Queen" January 28 at the Observatory in North Park.

Martha Graham Dance Company

This show is a mix of classical technique and modern sensibility. The Martha Graham Dance Company, a long-time leader in contemporary dance, is coming to San Diego. The dancers have been described as the “most skilled and powerful dancers you can ever hope to see” and Garin said the show will give you all the feels. Martha Graham was a modern dancer who is credited with changing American modern dance. Dancers perform her 180 works and lately included works by other choreographers. The Martha Graham Dance Company will be in San Diego on January 22 at the Civic Theatre.
