Environmentally Concerned Festival Enters Second Year

The Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival kicks off today and runs through Sunday (at the La Paloma Theater, Encinitas Library and Cottonwood Creek Park) and will feature films from around the world. I wish I had time to cover everything and since I don’t here’s a quick preview of the films.

The Encinitas Environmental Weekend kicks off June 5th with a party in honor of the Second Annual Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival (CCEFF) at Lemongrass Aveda Concept Salon and Spa (910 Second Street) from 7:30-9:30pm. In attendance will be filmmakers, the Encinitas Environmental Commission, the Encinitas City Council and your local community members.

The festival's mission statement says, "The Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival aims to collect the most innovative and inspiring films regarding environmental issues, nature and the ocean. The CCEFF mission is to use film to inspire positive action on behalf of the environment and encourage stewardship of the planet."

Film screenings then begin on Saturday, June 6th at 11:00am at the La Paloma Theatre. Films will include "One Water," about the countless ways water has touched human lives around the world and how that relationship changes as water grows scarcer; and "Fresh," about how people across America are re-inventing our food system. There will be post-film discussions following various films throughout the day including "Milking the Rhino," which offers an intimate portrait of rural Africans at the forefront of community-based conservation. There will be a special question and answer session with some of the filmmakers from "Milking the Rhino." The day’s events will include a panel discussion on the emergent “green” sector of the economy. In the evening there will also be a Surfrider Foundation Sunset Screening

On Sunday, June 7th, CCEFF will host two free film screenings from the official CCEFF film selection as well as various speakers throughout the day. From 12:00pm-1:30pm, "The Greening of Southie" will be screened. From 3:00pm-4:00pm, you can catch "Who's Got the Power?"
